Victim Services for Women and Children Mission Statement and Description Mission Statement
PROVIDE services in San Diego and San Diego County and to people, primarily women and children, who have experienced physical, emotional or sexual abuse. We are dedicated to preventing domestic violence through advocacy, education and support. Since May 2000, the Eugene Bowman Economic Empowerment Center has provided support, counseling, referrals and information to over 600 victims of violence. We believe it is important for survivors of all types of violence to regain control of their lives. The Center empowers them to make their own decisions through the recovery process. This includes such decisions as reporting their victimization to the police, and seeking medical services and counseling. We are dedicated to empowering youth, adults and families. We offer counseling, prevention and intervention services in a compassionate and healing environment. We share a passion to insure that every family and child has a healthy start and future. We provide information to the community concerning violence and other related issues. Our goals are to reduce domestic violence among women and children by addressing the root causes of domestic violence and to provide victims of violence with the knowledge and practical skills to the prevention of domestic violence. We provide services to victims of violence and abuse who seek protection from their abusers, peace in their lives, and justice. We also refer battered women and their children safe places where they can heal and empower them to rebuild their lives.
The residual effects of domestic violence can also be seen in the workplace as well. Some 21 percent of employed adults in the United States are victims of domestic violence, and the costs to U.S. businesses of intimate partner violence exceed $5.8 billion each year in absenteeism, lower productivity, turnover and safety costs - $4.1 billion of which is for direct medical and mental health care services. Yearly, there are 30,000 to 40,000 reported incidents of domestic abuse in the workplace, and 94 percent of corporate security directors rank the issue as a high security challenge at their companies. Project Description The Victims Services Program for Women and Children offers comprehensive services to victims of domestic abuse who seek protection from their abusers, Our organization continues to effectively meet the growing demand for services. We have developed specialized services for victims from traditionally underserved populations. Our operations, then, include the provision of services not only to shelter residents, but also on an outreach basis to clients who are not living in the shelters. Objective September of 2006 we reduced the number of interventions to children and women of domestic by 65% in San Diego County. Additional Objectives Improved community and system responses to children and their families of violence by 85% by December 2007 Provide training to the staff of various youth agencies to increase their awareness of child abuse and the effects of domestic violence on children. Provide outreach to women and families in crisis and to encourage voluntary self-referral. Population Served Our target populations are minority women and children, African American and Hispanic of all ages. Project Outcomes
